The article speaks about the powerful acting of Ashok Kumar in the film Meri Surat Teri Ankhen.

Ashok Kumar was sublime in the film Meri Surat Teri Ankhen.

Actor Ashok Kumar was sublime in the film Meri Surat Teri Ankhen. The film was released in 1963. It was directed by R .K. Rakhan. The story was written by Nihar Ranjan Gupta with the title “Ulka”.

Ulka was a successful play in bengali where actor Dipak Mukherjee played the role of ugly person. In the film Meri Surat Teri Ankhen it was shown that Tarun Bose the doctor advised different persons in the city. A poor muslim Kanhaiyalal tried for begetting child but could not get for a long time. While a rich man Iswarlal wanted a sweet child. When his child was born having very ugly face he asked the doctor Tarun Bose not to tell Achla Sachdev, his wife, that the child was born. He told his wife that the child was born dead. Tarun Bose gave the child to Kanhaiyalal who wanted a child. His wife died during an accident when fire broke out and in the attempt to save the child the fire spread into her body.

The songs of Rafi and Manna Dey made everyone spellbound.

Kanhaiyal took the small child to his village and taught him classical music. The child grew and Ashok Kumar played the role of the grown up child. Iswarlal got another child which was handsome played by Pradip Kumar. Tarun Bose’s daughter Asha Parekh was attracted to the excellent singing of Ashok Kumar.

At the end of the film the truth relating to the parents of Ashok Kumar was unfolded. He was killed at the end of the film in the effort to save his brother Pradip Kumar from money lenders at the end of the film.

The film stands out in the history of bollywood films for its excellent music. SD Burman composed the music of the film. Manna Dey’s song “pucho na kaise maine rain bitayi” in raag ahir bhairav and Rafi’s song “tere bin sune” and “naache man mora” stands out as few of the best classical compositions of SD Burman. The film should be restored for the classic story and soft music.

SD Burman faced immense competition from the leading composers of the 60s like Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali, OP Nayyar, Roshanlal Nagrath. He composed music of excellence showing his class in Meri Surat Teri Ankhen.
