In this article, I will discuss the wrongs of the 'beard' policy frequently adopted by management companies in the show biz business and what can be done to grant gay celebrities equal rights.

What is a beard?

A beard is commonly referred to a collection of hair that grows on the chin and cheeks of a man’s face, but it can also be metaphorically interpreted as a cover-up for gay celebrities (or men in general).

How did I come across this term?

I’m not sure whether you guys have heard of Tumblr. It is a micro-blogging platform and networking site that is popular among teenagers. ‘Fangirls’ is an invented term in the fandom that describes fans (mostly girls) who worship and enshrine their favorite celebrities. They share news, fan fictions and other stuff on Tumblr and are on different ‘teams’, for instance, Team Jelena (Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez) and Team Chrianna (Chris Brown and Rihanna). Anyway, I came across the term ‘beard’ one day because people are suspecting that a random girl is paid to be the ‘girlfriend’ (aka beard) of a member in a popular boy band so that the band can continue to make money. There is so much evidence to prove this shenanigan and since a lot of celebrities confess that the band’s management is utterly inhumane and monetized, I did some research on this and would like to share my thoughts with all of you.

Why I think the ‘beard’ policy is utterly inappropriate and discriminating

The ‘beard’ policy does exist. It has been performed on former boy band members such as Mark Feehily from Westlife and Lance Bass from N sync. They were ordered to have a ‘girlfriend’ and take her to public appearances in order to get their photos taken by the paparazzi, which are very often paid by their management. This policy is frequently adopted by the management of boy bands because once the gay member has come out, it will hurt the sales since their major fan base is consisted of day-dreaming and hormones-driven teenage girls who think they will have a chance with the boys someday.

From my point of view, however, the ‘beard’ policy is highly appropriate and insulting to both the girl employed and the member involved. It just shows how unaccepting we ‘civilized’ humans are. I wish that these celebrities are able to confess their sexual orientation freely in front of the camera and go out with their real significant others, but the fact is, the society, which claims itself liberal, is still narrow-minded, heteronormative and homophobic. Bullying against gay/lesbian kids remains prevalent around the world and the show biz business particularly looks down on openly gay people. Ellen DeGeneres, a renowned host for her own talk show, suffered from unemployment and a plunge of popularity for almost 10 years after confessing that she was a lesbian. I was furious at how brainwashed people are by ‘normality’ and stereotypes. Gays or lesbians may have a different sexual orientation than the majority, but they shall not be subjected to any kind of dehumanization or defamation. Calling the others ‘gay’ is NOT funny, and next time when you say it, say it with respect, understanding and sympathy.

How to change the common views towards sexuality?

My parents are close-minded and apparently don’t understand that sexuality is fluid and there are people who are born gays and lesbians. I don’t blame them, really, for they have been taught that men are for women and women are for men since a very young age. To them, legitimate marriage is for a man and a woman, there’s no other way. People who act differently must have suffered from traumas in childhood or are forced to change. This leads to my point, education. Education is very important when it comes to enlightening the next generation and changing the society ultimately. I’ve seen Tumblr people educating their children that gays and lesbians are ordinary and it is certainly working. Start with education and respect every member in the human race.

There will be no education in this department (and others) as long as there is organized religion.
