My thoughts on David Beckham and the decline of football.
David Beckham & Footballs Decline
David Beckham single handedly won the La Liga for Real Madrid tonight! David Beckham made a noble sacrifice so that his team could win! David Beckham sent a telepathic link to his gaffer so that he would be substituted! David Beckham used the Force to divert those three goals into the net!!
No matter what way you look at it, David Beckham was a one man army responsible for Real Madrid winning the league. According to British media anyway.
The sad fact is David Beckham is a half decent footballer made to look better than he actually is. He sat out most of this season and only played a few games and still he is the first to recieve plaudits for his role in Madrids victory tonight?
What did he do exactly? Squander three easy chances and walk off the park so he could be replaced by someone who scored two vital goals. The commentators on Sky Sports derided the descision to sub him but soon called it a masterstroke when his replacement scored with his first touch!! Then they started to use words such as "sacrifice" when mentioning Beckham!
Of course Beckham was responsible for the victory, he sat on the bench for half a season while Van Nistelrooy was Spain's top goalscorer! Let's give Beckham credit for that.
The glorifying of Beckham is not all I dislike him for. It's the fact he is everything that is wrong with commercialism in football. He is no longer a footballer, he is a celebrity. So much so his friend Tom Cruise was at tonights game. This is why tickets are so bloody expensive. A bunch of A-listers who probably have never heard of offside going to watch their pals and get some PR at the same time. This, and the fact he is the face of Police,Adidas,Pepsi Max and so much more merchandise that is ruining football. People are not paying to watch Real Madrid play football, they are paying to see David Beckham.
This was the reason LA Galaxy wanted him, they are buying the name not the player. It's wrong how in todays celebrity culture David Beckham can earn 40 million pound to shave, when all he can do is kick a ball. And he is far from the best. Steven Gerrard has more talent in one leg than Beckham ever had in both. And Gerrard is at least loyal to his fans and keeps focused on what he does: Football. The fans pay to see him playing football and that is what he does.
Beckham is costing fans hundreds of pounds through sheer commercialism and glorifying. Why not glorify a player who is actually good at what he does such as Gerrard or Ronaldo who both were responsible for leading their team to glory.
It took Beckham six years and many many adverts to win anything, but this seems to concern nobody as long as he stays on the front page of the news or is the face of a new razor or aftershave, whereas in recent times far better footballers have recieved little to no credit for being the catalyst to their clubs glory and although their wages cost fans at least they give some sort of return. Beckham has done nothing for six years and is now set to do even less for 125 million
