Death of Superstar Rajesh Khanna had been a great blow to the world of romance.

Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of bollywood films died today, on 18th July, 2012, at 6 pm. He was suffering from stomach ailments. He died at the age of 69 years.

He was the heartthrob of numerous Indians during the 1970s. From 1971 to 1973 he gave more than 30 hit films in a row. He acted in more than 180 films. But the films in the 1970s are worth mentioning.

He started his career with the film Akhri Khat in 1966 directed by Chetan Anand. He acted in other films after that including Raaz, Khamoshi, Ittefaz, etc. But he came to limelight with Shakti Shamanta’s film Aradhana in 1969. SD Burman composed the music of his film. From that time the combination of Rajesh Khanna with singer Kishore Kumar stormed bollywood films.

Majority of his films had hit music.

All the films of Rajesh Khanna had successful music of RD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarellal and Kalynaji Anandji. His hit songs included “mere sapno ki raani kab ayegi tu”, “jay jay shiv Shankar”, “zindagi kaisi hai paheli hai”, etc. He was successful opposite all the actresses of 1970s, including Sharmila Tagore in Amar Prem, Mumtaz in Aap Ki Kasam, Tanuja in Hathi Mere Saathi, Tina Munim in Sautan, to name a few. The list was very long.

He was associated with many realistic films like Anand, Safar, Bawarchi, where the middle-class life was exhibited. He faded away from the industry in the 1980s, when action films like Cooli, Burning Train, Akhree Rasta became popular. He continued acting and played many important roles in social films. His wife Dimple Kapadia is an established actress. His two daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinki Khanna acted in a number of bollywood films. His son-in-law Akshay Kumar is a big superstar of the recent times. Different actors from the silver screen had mourned the death of the first superstar. His soul should rest in peace.

Thanks for the comments. Rajesh Khanna was very popular among the women in the 70s, due to the excellent romantic performances in films like Aradhana, Amar Prem, etc.

Yes you are right Souvikji. Very few Bollywood actors nowadays can match his versatility, style, charisma and the hold he had on people. He was an icon par excellence!

His success was also related to realistic stories connecting the common man like in Anand, Safar, Khamoshi, etc.
