Donna - Queen of Disco - Summer Dead

This iconic singer, the original diva of the disco era, died yesterday at the age 63 from cancer, and immediately large swathes of music industry people rushed to pay tribute to her, famous tracks including the unforgettable I Feel Love.

Duran Duran singer Nick Rhodes - on Facebook - praised her legacy, saying that there is no doubt that I Feel Love had perhaps the greatest influence on modern music. Donna, along with producer Giorgio Moroder, pioneered electronic sequencer use for dance records, in 1977 a brave new frontier.

That one song could radically alter public perception of music seems extraordinary but I Feel Love achieved that and more. Sir Elton John called for her to be more widely recognised, as her music is timeless. He thinks it shameful that Donna has never been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.

When disco superstars like Gloria Gaynor and the Village People were very popular, Donna Summer stood out for her soulful delivery, whichmade her appeal wide-ranging. Her greatest successes were self-reliance and personal strength anthems, taking advantage of her amazing range, her voice fragile and defiantly powerful as the songs demanded.

Early 1980 synthesizers and electronic drums experimentation brought Donna renewed success. Her acting career included the 1978 film Thank God It's Friday, when she performed her hit Last Dance, the song for which Donna won her first Grammy award.
Donna had been resident in Englewood, near Florida, and was a very religious lady, who had three daughters and four grandchildren, testaments to the success of her her extraordinary life and continued legacy.

Strangely, though her songs were seen as anthems by the gay community, her relationship with them became strained after her becoming a born-again Christian.

There is little doubt that the 1977 release of I feel Love changed the music world, unquestionably one of the most important records in the history of music. This stripped away the idea that dance music is about funk, introducing the hypnotic, robotic, machine-like sound to the eager public.

Donna V

A whole generation of bands fell under the influence, and every form of music that followed bore some relation to it, Donna's background in musicals (she featured in Hair) giving her an amazing ability to lose herself in her music. Her voice was distinctive and special, and her undoubted value to the music world truly immense. Her death is a sad moment in music history, and she will never be forgotten.
