Gareth Gates at Cox's Yard
Cox's Yard is situated in a very picturesque location, on the riverside at Stratford Upon Avon. It is a timber buliding, which was once a wood yard, hence the title. Nowadays it boasts of being a Micro Brewery, brasserie, it has bars, a gift shop, and a history of Stratford exhibition.
It also provides live entertainment upstairs, a long room with a bar, and subdued lighting, with the stage set at the end. There is so much character and quaintness about it, and it's an ideal venue for an enjoyable night out.
On Sunday 18th December I travelled there to watch Gareth Gates perform an accoustic gig with his band, which comprises of a guitar and piano accompaniment to his vocal performance.
I had the best seat in the house
A dear friend of mine had won tickets in a competition, which she offered to myself and keith to accompany her and her husband. These seats were really special, as we had a table right next to the stage. There were a limited amount of tables, and the rest of the fans were given seats next to one another, but due to the lack of space, they had to be put quite close to one another. I know just how lucky we were to have those seats, and I am so grateful to her for sharing them with us.
Gareth was billed to come on at 8-30pm, but knowing that he had to do 2 performances of Aladdin at Milton Keynes, and then get to Stratford less than 2 hours later, we had our doubts as to whether it would start on time. but when you are in the company of good friends with a glass of wine in your hand, it really doesn't matter, because if something is that good, it's well worth waiting for.
We sat there chatting
We went to our table at 8-30, and then we chatted until he finally arrived. I was enjoying the rustic surroundings, and having had a long drive it was nice to sit down and relax. Gareth appeared with his band at 9-30, and by that time the venue was full to bursting with excited fans, all looking forward to seeing him perform.
He was dressed in casual clothes with light trousers and a shirt, which must have felt very different to his Aladdin costume. His first son was HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW, which he sang with great feeling, and he was greeted with rapturous applause after every song that he sang.
He blended a wonderful mix of ballads, and rock into his performance. he knows just how to work a crowd, and get audience participation, many times encouraging us to clap, hold our hands up, and then he held out the mike to get the audience to sing. He sang ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER, the song he wrote to pay tribute to his mother, which is on his 3rd album, PICTURES OF THE OTHER SIDE.
He also sang songs from his second album, much to the delight of his fans, his number one hit, ANYONE ONE OF US, and SUNSHINE. his version of SOMEONE LIKE YOU, was breathtakingly emotional, and then he became a rock god, belting out classics such as SUMMER OF 69, YOUR SEX IS ON FIRE, to name a few. His rocky version of SPIRIT IN THE SKY always gets the party going.
Then afterwards
When he had finished, the crowd was chanting for more, so he came back and performed 2 more numbers. He then announced he was going to do a meet and greet, and within seconds some one had come over to ask if they could use our table.
The fans lined up to see him, and get their picture taken with him. He has fans ranging from teenagers to grand mothers, and he always treats everyone kindly and curteously. I had to smile when I heard one young girl, who was standing right at the back say,
" I am not going anywhere. I have waited 10 years to meet him!" I reckoned she must have been about 10 years old when she first became his fan.
As we left, there was still a long queue of people waiting patiently to see him, and it was 11-30, so I reckon some of them must have gone home very late.
We came away feeling as if we had enjoyed a very special evening. Gareth gets better everytime he sings, if that is possible. His voice has matured, and is very powerful , and Cox's Yard was the perfect venue for an impromptu gig.
