Gates /Wilkes Academies, and their dedicated team
Ten year after Pop Idol, Gareth Gates has experienced the ups and downs of show business, and he is still only 27. He has enjoyed a very successful Pop Career, reached the semi finals in Dancing on Ice, and also won rave reviews both in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream-coat, and more recently as Marius in Les Mis, in the 25th Anniversary Tour, and also in the West End production at the Queens Theatre.
This year sees him perform at Momentous Musicals in a one off production on 19th July at the Wimbledon Theatre, but before that Gareth stars in Loserville for a run at the Yorkshire Playhouse. This musical was co written by James Bourne, who was a member of the group Busted, who also enjoyed great pop success. Gareth’s wife Suzanne also has a great deal of experience in show business having trained as a dancer and choreographer at Laine Theatre Arts College
Suzanne knows Nikki from her dancing days
Suzanne has a friendship with Nikki for many years, as have Gareth and Jonathon. The two wives have danced on the tours of many big names in show business including Robbie Williams in careers that span 2 decades. Jonathon has also had the experience of performing in Musical Theatre with Rocky Horror and Godspell, so it’s not surprising that these 4 talented people want to help aspiring youngsters who want to make a career in show business.
Jonathon and Nikki had previously opened their own academy, and when they joined forces with Gareth and Suzanne, being true to his roots, Gareth was pleased that the first one was to be in his home town of Bradford. This was followed in January 2012 by one at Milton Keynes., where he had been performing in Aladdin. When interviewed recently, Gareth explained what had prompted him to get involved with these ventures.
Gareth had this to say recently
QUOTE
He said: “It is about giving something back. It is about passing on the baton to the youngsters. We opened our own performing arts schools and then joined forces with Jonathan Wilkes and his wife and decided we wanted to open an academy here in Milton Keynes. I hope the children that come and see me in Aladdin will be inspired to do it for themselves.
“All four of us were together recently when we decided to open an academy in Milton Keynes so we can give something back, pass on our experience and hopefully pass the baton onto these young kids. Between us we know lots of big names, dancers and actors and we will get them down to help the kids at the academy.
“Having one here in Milton Keynes will be great because it is not far from London and my wife will be there every week teaching, we will all be involved teaching and helping the kids.
“I remember as a child that I was always into music and I learnt to play the guitar and sing from a young age, I was always involved in those types of things but I was never much of a dancer. With my speech problems I was shy and would shy away from the acting side of things.
UNQUOTE
With four such experienced people being involved, I am sure these academies will be a huge success, and a great platform for aspiring youngsters to realise their dreams.
