How much do Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears have in common?
From a music perspective, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears cannot be compared. They may share several similarities, but Britney, who may have been forced to go to a psychological clinic and has shaved her head, is still active, performing and glamorous; and with a legendary career to step on.
How much in common could there be between a 17-year-old TV super star that stars in Disney’s “Hannah Montana” and is a talented singer, songwriter and performer and a 29-year-old pop star with smash hits in the US Billboard 200? One could say a lot, one could some, but not as many as to claim that Miley is the new Britney.
a) Common Start from Disney as Teen Actors
Britney Spears made her first steps at the age of 11 staring at Disney’s “New Mickey Mouse Club”, although she was originally rejected for being “too young to join the series” at the time. Similarly, Miley Cyrus became globally known at the age of 13 as being the leading star of Disney’s “Hannah Montana”, initially rejected for being “too small, too young”, at the time. Both Britney and Cyrus carved their path to fame as teen actors staring at Disney’s successful series.
b) Successful Debut Albums
Miley Cyrus’s debut album “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” (2007) peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, and went 3x Multi Platinum. Having sold 4,000,000+ copies worldwide and 326,000 copies in the first week of release, “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” is the top selling album of “Hannah Montana” OST, propelling Miley to stardom and opening the door for a successful career in music.
Moreover, both Britney and Miley come from the South (McComb, Mississippi and Nashville, Tennessee respectively); both are managed by their mothers (in the case of Britney though this proved rather disastrous psychologically); and both are adored by teenage fans around the globe (Britney at her early steps as a teen). Yet, this is where similarities end, I’m afraid.
a) Miley stood out at “Hannah Montana”
Although they both started as teen stars at Disney series, Britney did not become famous from her role at “New Mickey Mouse Club” because she had to perform next to huge names including Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and Justin Timberlake. Britney became really famous as a pop star after releasing “Baby One More Time” (1999). On the contrary, Miley stood out as the leading star of “Hannah Montana” where she starred a double role as Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana.
b) Britney was too provocative
At the age of 16 when Britney made her debut, she was already provocative. Who can forget her infamous pose in a Catholic schoolgirl outfit at “Baby One More Time” video clip? And then, as the time progressed, Britney became more and more provocative and definitely not a role model to teenage girls. No one can argue her talent, hard work and great performances, but when it comes to modesty, Britney has a huge issue there.
On the contrary, Miley Cyrus is a modest teenager, who shows no signs of turning into a provocative woman. At the Teen Choice Awards 2009 she allegedly performed a stripper-pole action, but again it was nothing like what Britney has performed numerous times in her career.
c) Britney is a music legend
Britney has sold nearly 82,000,000 records in her career, has achieved numerous #1 hits, she is the top selling artist of the decade in the United States with 32,000,000 records and has been awarded numerous Grammy Awards. She has also performed with Michael Jackson in “The Way You Make Me Feel” at the 30th Anniversary Special that took place at Madison Square Garden in 2001. There is no doubt that Britney Spears is a music legend and even if Miley Cyrus has the potential to do big stuff in her career, she is a different style than Britney and she lacks the glam and the “spice” to achieve it.
Overall, Britney Spears has done crazy things in her career, and some of them had a huge cost to her. From a music perspective, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears cannot be compared because Miley is a songwriter and a singer, while Britney is a pop phenomenon, a sexy woman, a top performer. Moreover, Miley is still very young and the amount of success she enjoys is more than she can really handle. She wants to abandon music, where she is admittedly successful, for an acting career where she will take a huge risk. It’s too early to think she has given all she had in music and at this point a career change may be a huge mistake. On the other hand, one could argue that as fast as her career kicked off, so fast is going to close because it is not based on a solid ground, on solid decisions; unlike Britney, who may have been forced to go to a psychological clinic and has shaved her head, but she is still active, performing and glamorous, as before; as ever.
