Long before Harry Potter was even a twinkle in JK Rowling’s eye, Middle Earth captivated millions of young and old around the world. Tolkien’s masterful description of Middle Earth, the depth of his characters and the riveting nature of his story are beyond comparison.
Its creator John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein South Africa, at the age of three he returned to England where he remained for the rest of his life1. Tolkien was a scholar who studied at Exeter College, Oxford learning about “languages, literature, mythology, and the classics”1. As a true Englishman he served in World War I, during which he contracted trench fever and was in and out of the hospital for months1. It was at this time that he started creation of Middle Earth.
In the sixth grade, a friend of mine suggested I read The Hobbit. I checked it out and began to read, but couldn’t wade through what I saw as the quagmire the Unexpected Party. Eventually I gave up and returned it virtually unread. A few weeks later Brett asked me how I liked the book. I told him that it was the most boring thing I had ever read and that it was back safely in the library stacks. Brett told me to check it out again and to plow through the first chapter; if I did I wouldn’t be disappointed.
As I read this time, I could see with vivid clarity the characters and felt a strong connection to them. His tale of good versus evil is not new, but his creation of Middle Earth and the races of Middle Earth set the saga in new and fascinating backdrop.
Reading The Hobbit was a turning point in my life. This was the first novel I had ever read and it wetted my appetite such that I was rarely without a book from that point on. It significantly shaped my future by setting me on a path of learning that I never left.
