Veteran actor Joy Mukherjee died in Mumbai on 9th March, 2012. He was 73 years old. He was the son of producer Sashadhar Mukherjee.

He made his debut in the film love in Simla in 1960. After he had acted in a number of romantic films one after the other. In 1962 his film Ek Musafir Ek Haseena opposite Sadhna became super hit. OP Nayyar’s excellent music and Mohammad Rafi’s brilliant songs like “bahut shukriya”, “aap yuhin agar humse milte rahe”, etc. were responsible for the success of the film.

After that all the films of Joy Mukherjee became hit one after the one. Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon in 1963 became super hit. He acted opposite Asha Parekh in the film. Rafi’s songs in that film also became super hit including “banda parwar thamlo jigar”, “nazneen bara rangeen hai waada tera”, etc.

Joy Mukherjee will be remembered for his romantic films.

Excellent shooting in exotic locations like Jammu and Kashmir contributed in the success of Joy Mukherjee’s films. His film Ziddi opposite Asha Parekh, Ji Chahta Hai opposite Rajashri, Shagird opposite Saira Banu, Humsaya opposite Sharmila Tagore all did great business.

His film Love in Tokyo in 1966 ended up being blockbuster. Shankar Jaikishan’s excellent music and Mohammad Rafi’s brilliant songs like “Japan, love in Tokyo”, “o mere shahe khuban”, “aaja re aa zara aa” became super hit.

In the 70s, Joy Mukherjee faded away from the industry after action films dominated bollywood. Even then his films should be restored to show respect to the romantic star whose soft romantic films entertained the audience for than 15 years.

Joy Mukherjee belonged to a film family with his brother Deb Mukherjee also acting in films like Ek Baar Muskurado.
