Nic Hamilton Drives to Success
Nic Hamilton is best known as being the younger brother of Lewis Hamilton, who was the Formula One world champion of 2008. Therefore it is no great surprise to learn that after being inspired by his brother’s example. Nic has the same aspirations.
But Nic has more to overcome to achieve his dream because he suffers from cerebra palsy. Having been born before time, and then clinging onto life, his survival is itself a miracle, and proof of his very strong character and determination.. And like many other brave people who have a difficulty, this has only spurred him on even more to want to prove that he has got what it takes to be a racing driver.
In a new BBC series, Beyond Disability, which aims to show just what high achievers people with disabilities are, this programme shows Nic entering the highly competitive world of racing. Nic speaks about living in the shadow of his famous brother, and not having a great deal of attention from his father at that time because of his involvement in Lewis’s career as his manager.
Nic is not jealous of his brother.
But instead of feeling bitter and jealous, it inspired Nic to prove that he also has got what it takes to compete. He explains that his father doesn’t treat him any differently, or allow him any sympathy because of his disability. This is what Nic wants, he wants to be a success, and would never allow his disability to be an excuse for a bad performance, or get in his way.
Like all racing drivers, Nic has had his share of dangerous situations and his car has crashed off the track, and from the point of view of his mother, it can be agonising knowing that in his efforts to prove himself, her son can so easily be injured. There is no way she can try to be protective, Nic wants to prove he can do it, and she must stand back and let him do just that.
The cameras follow him during the 2011 season, through all the highs and lows, this young man who only 4 years ago spent most of his time in a wheel chair. We see him working on a tread mill to strengthen his legs, refusing to let anyone treat him as though he is disabled.
Then came the last race of the season
Then in October, just before the last race of the year, his father explains how he must qualify to stand any chance of competing again in the next season. he also remarks that if Nic can come 10th, that would be an amazing result. Lewis speaks glowingly of his brother’s determination and never say die attitude, and it is clear to see how strong the bonds of this family are.
Spurred on by all this encouragement, Nic went out and came 9th proving to everyone that he is a force to be reckoned with. His example has spurred other people in wheel chairs to want to be like him, and during the past year he has spent time visting schools with children who have disabilities offering hope and encouragement to them for all they want to achieve.
I found this programme very inspiring, Nic is an exceptional young man, and the Hamilton family are so wise to let him be himself, and fulfill his dreams. I wish them all the very best for the future.

A very nice tribute to Nic, carol. I tip my Stetson to Nic because I know the challenges he faces. I know them for two reasons, I have a stepdaughter that has CP and I know the daily challenges that she must meet and overcome. I was also born half-blind and half crippled and had been told by doctors that I would be blind and crippled by the time I was a teenager, but I went to prove all of them wrong. I built and raced my own stock cars back in the day when a man could afford to build and race his own cars. I took more than my share of checker flags in those car. Besides my racing I earned a pilots license, Black belts in two different style martial arts, have learned to sky dive and much more. I achieved everything that I set out to do and I feel sure that Nic will too.
