The article speaks about the death of renowned music director Ravi Shankar Sharma.

Ravi Shankar Sharma expired on 7th March, 2012.

The holi of 2012 in India had sorrowful memory. Renowned music director Ravi Shankar Sharma died on 7th March, 2012. He was 86 years old. He was born on 3rd March, 1926. He sang the chorus song “bande mataram” under composition of Hemant Kumar in 1952 in the film Anandmath.

He independently started composing music from the film Vachan. He rose to stardom with his brilliant composition of music in the film Chaudavi Ka Chand in 1960. It was Guru Dutt’s film. Mohammad Rafi’s ghazal “chaudavi ka chand ho ya aaftab ho” stands out as the greatest ghazal sung in bollywood films.

Ravi continued the dream run in films like Gharana, Bharosa, Gumrah, etc. Rafi’s songs in these films like “husnwale tera jawab nahi” touched the souls of numerous Indians. Ravi was the greatest contributor in the films of BR Chopra. Most of those films like Gumrah, Waqt, Humraaz ended up being blockbusters due to the immortal music of Ravi. He unearthed the hidden talent of Mahendra Kapoor in numerous songs like “chalo ek baar”, “in hawawon me”, “neele gagan ki tale” all were gems. He had given lot of duet songs to Asha Bhosle.

His music was immortal.

Other than Roshanlal Nagrath, no other composer used the sarengi to perfection like Ravi. He used it in style in Raj Kumar’s film Kaajal in 1965. Two of Rafi’s songs in somber mood still haunts the listeners “chulene do nazuk hoton ko”, and “yeh ishq agar khulke”. His other notable films include Neel Kamal, Do Kaliyan, Do Badan, Ankhen to name a few. He received filmfare award more than once for the film Gharana and Khandan. He deserved many more.

Ravi faded out of the industry in the 70s, when soft tunes did not get value. But he made comeback in the early 80s with the composition of music in the film Nikaah. His song “dil ki arma” made the listeners spellbound. He made huge contribution in Malayalam films by giving music in films like Panchagni, Vaishali, etc. His wife died in 1988. He has a son Ajay and daughter in law Varsha Usgaonkar. He had remained immortal in his works. His films and songs should be preserved.
