Nimmi was a famous Muslim actress of the Hindi screen. She was a top star in her own right

Nimmi the eternal Star

Nimmi was an actress from the Mumbai screen who carved a niche for herself in the world of Hindi films. Nimmi belonged to the genre of Muslim heroines who dominated the stage in Hindu India. In a career spanning nearly 20 years from 1949 onwards Nimmi acted with all the top stars of that period. She was born Nawab Banoo at Agra in 1933. Her father Abdul Hakim was a military contractor at Meerut. For some time she was sent to Abottabad (now in Pakistan) to live with her grandmother. However the connections of her aunt Jyoti who was an actress in Bombay in thirties drew her to Bombay.

By the sixties Nimmi was upstaged by younger girls like Sadhana, Asha Parekh and Waheeda Rehman and Nimmi found she was getting second lead roles. She decided to call it quits and left films. She married S Ali Raza who died in 2005. She was romantically linked with Dilip Kumar, but both denied it.
Nimmi however let an indelible mark on Hindi cinema as the simple village girl who won the heart of the Indian masses. Her prominent films included Deedar, Daag, Barsaat, Aan,Pehli Raat, Society Amar and many more. Nimmi stays in her sea facing Juhu apartment in Mumbai and is active at social gatherings. We can remember her as the beautiful Muslim girl who stole the heart of millions in India by her beauty and histrionic ability. Nimmi lives in her sea facing apartment in Juhu and is still active.

The Rise of Nimmi

Her debut was dramatic when she was noticed on the set by Raj Kapoor who cast her as the second lead after Nargis in Barsaat. In that film she overshadowed all and created a favorable impression on the masses. Overnight she became a household name. Her best period saw her act opposite Dilip Kumar in 5 films including Daag and Deedar. She also starred with DevAnand. Her film Saaz with him was a hit.
Nimmi rode the path to success during the fifties and she was cast as the heroine by all the big names in Hindi cinema like Raj Kapoor, Shorab Modi, Guru Dutt and Mehboob Khan.

The Down slide

By the sixties Nimmi was upstaged by younger girls like Sadhana, Asha Parekh and Waheeda Rehman and Nimmi found she was getting second lead roles. She decided to call it quits and left films. She married S Ali Raza who died in 2005. She was romantically linked with Dilip Kumar, but both denied it.
