Colin Fith realised his dream when he won an Oscar in THE KINGS SPEECH.

Well done to Colin Firth

For weeks now Colin Firth has been heavily tipped to win an award for his portrayal of King George 6th in the movie THE KING’S SPEECH. He was nominated after a very heartrending performance as the stammering king, who was suddenly projected into the limelight when his elder brother Edward 7th abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson, who was the love of his life.

Back in the 1930s people had not been educated about afflictions , and there was a tendency to be ashamed of a child who had difficulties. For them to be a member of the Royal family, whom the public looked up to, was even worse. King George knew that, and this only served to add extra pressure to him when he tried to make a speech.

Who went to the Premiere?

When the film premiered, Independent Television sent Gareth Gates, well known for his stammer, and his fortitude in coping with it, to see it, and express whether the film actually captured the essence of stammering, and the fear it arouses in the sufferer . Gareth gave it a thumbs up, explaining it is a very difficult thing to convey if you are not afflicted in this way, but it had been achieved, and he was very impressed. Gareth has raised awareness of stammering in the UK, by being part of the Mc Guire programme, which helps sufferers.

THE KINGS SPEECH will now raise awareness all around the world, with Colin Firth scooping the best actor award. He truly deserve this, and it makes me proud to be British.
