It's December again and it's time for the 41st Metro Manila Film Festival. It however has never been this controversial. It could be due to a lot of firsts - first Aldub big screen offering, first MMFF for Jadine, first MMFF for the new Chairman and so on.

New Chairman

Francis Tolentino recently resigned from being the Metro Manila Development Authority chairman (organizer of MMFF) in lieu of his senatorial bid . Emerson Carlos now chairs the office.

Ticket Swapping Anomaly

In the afternoon of December 25, issues about ticket swapping trended in social media after a Twitter user claimed that instead of getting a ticket for My Bebe Love, the ticket seller handed him one for Beauty and the Bestie.

My Bebe Love director Jose Javier Reyes expressed his sentiments and warned the Aldubnation to be vigilant.

This was followed by SM Cinema's response. They claimed that there was a mistake but assured the concerned party that it has been corrected and that sales will count to the film that the tickets were bought for.

It was only two days after when the MMFF committee released an official statement through their official Facebook page and local newspaper that the issue was baseless which makes sense since the photo of the original Twitter post about the issue did not belong to the user. Another account posted a different picture however it was deemed invalid because the date on the screenshot was December 24 (the festival opens on Christmas Day).

Honor Thy Father Disqualification

Disqualifying the movie Honor Thy Father from the Best Picture award was a last minute decision. The committee sent Reality Entertainment a letter stating the reason which was "non-disclosure" of the films entry to Cinema One originals.

Dondon Monteverde of Reality Entertainment Inc. said that they never violated any MMFF rules. The movie which stars John Lloyd Cruz was a replacement to the movie Hermano Pule which withdrew its entry in the festival.

This of course annoyed the fans who believed that Honor Thy Father deserves the Best Picture award considering its plot.

MMFF Box Office: Who's Leading?

As always, this year belongs to comedy films in terms of ticket sales. Star Cinema's and Viva Film's entry Beauty and the Bestie and Octo Arts' My Pabebe Love are the expected top grossers which means unavailability of the gross earning reports from MMFF committee could lead to a social media battle between the Aldubnation and the supporters of Vice Ganda, lead star in the Star Cinema entry.

Earlier reports mentioned that My Pabebe Love earned 1 million in 1 hour. That was subsequently matched with another report which said that Beauty and the Bestie earned 2.6 million in its first 30 minutes.

TV5 , on a news program, declared that My Pabebe Love was the first-day top grosser. This was supported by an article in Philippine Star which said that the Aldub-starrer earned 29.3 milllion while the Vice-Coco tandem had 26.3 million. These results were later considered partial and unofficial since they were just reports from SM Cinema and that official result was not readily available due to the delayed results from other cinemas especially in the provinces.

GMA on the hand released figures on its news webpage which showed that My Bebe Love broke first-day sales record for any Filipino movie by earning 60.8 million. This was considered self-proclamation since this was just based on the network's tabulation of reports from cinemas from Metro Manila and the provinces.

Fans of Beauty and the Bestie were saying that the movie was worth their money and should be the top-grosser because of the long queues in the malls for the said movie. It was praised by the audience for its production, the cast, the story and its total entertainment. One called it the "laughter treat" this Christmas and MMFF.

On December 27, MMFF revealed the top 4 in no particular order (Beauty and the Bestie, My Bebe Love, Haunted Mansion, All You Need is Pag-ibig). The figures were not shown to protect the other movies and to not influence the moviegoers by the sales ranking.

MMFF Gabi ng Parangal

The Awards night was held on December 27 at the KIA Theatre Araneta Center but the delayed telecast will be shown on December 28 on TV5. It will include the Parade of the Stars held on December 23. They were co-produced by Viva Entertainment.
