The Atlanta Hawks unveiled a new bronze statue of NBA Legend “The Human Highlight Film” Dominique Wilkins.

Dominique Wilkins has now entered a new artistic medium

On March 5, 2015, the best team in the Eastern Conference of the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks (49-13) unveiled 13 1/2 feet tall granite sculpture of the greatest player to have ever played in their organization, Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins at a private luncheon and ceremony in the Philips Arena.

Dominique “The Human Highlight Film” Wilkins played 12 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks (1982-1994) and was the face of the franchise during this tenure there. Known for his athletic ability and highlight reel dunks, Dominique Wilkins was the centerpiece of a Hawks team that won at least 50 games over four consecutive seasons in the 1980s. He holds the franchise record for points (23,292) and games played (882).

The Ceremony

Special guests at the ceremony included NBA commissioner Adam Silver, the current Hawks roster and coaching staff, Hawks alumni, and Dominique Wilkins' legendary contemporaries such as Julius Erving, Bernard King, Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, and Karl Malone.

"We talk about being immortalized in your life," Wilkins told the audience. "What bigger stage to stand on than to have a statue of you in front of the franchise and building that you love? I know nobody who loves this organization like I do ... I bleed and breathe Hawks. Even when I played for other teams, I felt funny."

There were video tributes, including one from Larry Bird, who took a playful jab at Wilkins by saying ''Congratulations on that statue. I'm pretty sure it wasn't made with you in a defensive stance.'' Proving the rivalry between them is still strong despite their years off the court. Ha-Ha!

Dominique Wilkins and Larry Bird had one of the most iconic battles in NBA Playoffs history. In Game 7 of the 1988 Eastern Conference Semifinals, “The Human Highlight Film” and “Larry Legend” carried their respective teams to a thrilling finish, trading bucket for bucket in the fourth quarter until Boston won with an 118-116 victory. Wilkins finished with 47 points and Bird had 34-with 20 of his points tallied in the fourth quarter. “The basket was like a well,” remembered Wilkins. “I couldn’t miss. He couldn’t miss. And it went down to the last shot of the game. Who was going to make the last shot? That's the greatest game I’ve ever played in or seen played. It was two guys who just did not want to lose.”

Congrats, Dominique!!!

The Dominique Wilkins statue is outside the main entrance of Philips Arena in front of the totemic 65-foot steel letters that compose the city's name. Dominique Wilkins is one of the four players whose jerseys have been retired by the Atlanta Hawks.

Congrats, Dominique Wilkins! Well deserved!!!
