The world mourns the loss of a Hollywood legend. Carrie Fisher was more than just a pretty face. Meet Carrie the actress, the novelist, and the face of victory over drug addiction and mental illness.

Carrie Fisher: The Passing of a Princess

Carrie Fisher’s daughter Billy Lourd confirmed the news to a world in mourning. On December 27, 2016 at 08:55 AM, Carrie had died at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles following a cardiac arrest on a plane from London to LA four days prior.

Carrie was born on October 21, 1956 to the legendary Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, a famous singer of his time. Her father left her mother for Elizabeth Taylor when Carrie was two, and when Debbie remarried, her husband squandered her life savings. Carrie hid in the world of literature, writing poetry and reading the classics. While she never graduated high school, Carrie was a student in a London drama school, and was later accepted into Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She never finished her college education due to her accepting the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars while in school.

While Carrie dated Harrison Ford briefly during the filming of Star Wars and was engaged to Dan Akroyd in 1980, her only legal marriage was to Paul Simon in 1983. In 1984, the couple divorced and she became involved with a talent agent, Bryon Lourd, who is the father of her daughter, Billie.

Carrie is, of course, most famous for her role as Princess Leia in Star Wars. While she loved the script and screenplay for Star Wars, Carrie expressed her doubt that the movie would ever catch on with the public. Aside from that breakaway movie, she also had roles in over forty other movies including When Harry Met Sally, The Blues Brothers, and Austin Powers, Man of Mystery.

Carrie Fisher was also a prolific television actress, with over forty-five appearances in various episodes of shows that spanned many years. Her television films include Happily Ever After, Liberty, and Romancing the Bride. She had appearances in cartoons such as playing Peter’s boss, Angela, in Family Guy and playing herself in the spoof show, Robot Chicken. She had several guest appearances playing herself on episodes of other shows like The Big Bang Theory, Entourage, and Sex in the City. She co-hosted TCM’s Essentials, a talk show dedicated to film, and starred in several documentaries.

The talented Carrie wrote several books, scripts and novel introductions. The most famous piece of work she wrote was 1987’s Postcards from the Edge, her first novel. The award winning book loosely paralleled her own troubled battle with addiction, depression, and Bipolar Disorder and was released into a film version in 1990. Carrie took her battles to the stage in the one woman play in 2009 in the autobiographical play, Wishful Drinking.

Carrie Fisher was, for many people, the face of victory over drugs and mental illness. She was public about her struggles, appearing on many shows such as 20/20 (ABC), The Late Late Show (NBC), and a BBC show titled The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive. Carrie granted an interview in 2001 to Psychology Today, explaining her addiction and recovery. She received the prestigious Harvard College award in 2016 for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Cultural Humanism because of her openness in discussing her battles with mental illness and addiction.

Carrie’s famous friend, the French Bulldog Gary, was in reality a therapy animal to help her cope with her inner demons.

For all of her Star Wars fans, Carrie Fisher will be featured one last time in the film series for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII as General Leia Organa.
