The Christmas lights at Herne Bay were turned on by Gareth Gates, and the cast of Sleeping Beauty, which is being held at the Marlowe Theatre. Read on to find out more about it.

Christmas Comes to Herne Bay

It may only be mid November, but that didn’t stop the cast of Sleeping Beauty, headed by Gareth Gates, from coming to Herne Bay to switch on the Christmas lights. The event was very well organised, at first party games for parents and children were performed, the winners getting £ 50 to spend in a local photography shop, then after the second game, the winners received free tickets for Sleeping Beauty.

The crowd were treated to a show of local talent, starting with a boy and girl dance group called Northern Lights. They were followed by a delightful group of young girls, known as cheer leaders, dressed in sparkly outfits, who put their all into performing their dance routine. There were many proud parents watching them.

Then the East Kent College arts group danced and sang a few Christmas songs, the event was sponsored by them, and they showed us what their enthusiastic students could do. By the time they had finished performing, a huge crowd had collected, full of eager anticipation to see the lights come on.

Then the cast of Sleeping Beauty arrived

Our announcer, who had done a fine job of building up the excitement, announced the pantomime cast one by one, and they came on the stage and all spoke a few words. Then the switch on of the lights They looked great in their costumes, the funny man, Ben Roddy cracked a joke, and the evil queen played by Toyah Wilcox cheekily remarked that she hoped to snog Gareth Gates on stage every night. He made a very handsome Prince, who could blame her?

The cast then proceeded to sing and dance to a medley of Christmas songs, their enthusiasm was infectious, the crowd were singing and dancing along with them, the Christmas spirit had truly begun. Local newspaper photographers were busy with their cameras, and there was much excitement in the air.

They Connected with the Crowd

The pantomime cast came down to where the crowds were pressing up against the safety railings, they stretched their hands out to the people, greeting them, and were rewarded with a very heartfelt response from the crowd. Anyone seeing them all resplendent in their pantomime costumes, playing to the public would be tempted to go and see more in the pantomime, which promises to be the most spectacular one ever this year. Apart from their visit to Herne Bay, which was so successful, they also turned on the Christmas lights in Canterbury, Whitstable, and Dartford, and next week they will also be at Deal.
