FOOTLOOSE the Musical, which has been adapted from the idea of the 1984 film which starred Kevin Bacon, is now touring the country. Read on to find out what I thought of it.

Gareth Gates is FOOTLOOSE in all areas.

FOOTLOOSE, which first came to prominence in 1984, when Kevin Bacon starred in it, is based on a true story. It's about a small town in Oklahoma, which banned dancing, because it was believed to be immoral, and the local preacher was convinced it would encourage, drunkenness, drug taking, and general debauchery.

In the stage play, the reason is that the preacher and his wife lost a son in a road accident, with some other teeenagers of the town, and so dancing is blamed for that and forbidden. And then along comes Ren and his mother, a boy whose father has walked out on them, dancing makes him feel happy, and he wants to share that with the rest of the town, but comes up against stiff opposition from the town council, and the minister.By the end of the show, he has the whole town dancing, even Willard, who insists he can't dance, and even the preacher and his wife approve.

The Actors

Luke Baker, who is the star of the show, is perfect for the role of Ren, the new boy who can dance, but is forbidden to arrange any dancing. When he does dance, his moves are a joy to watch, and he. has a great voice

The preacher was very believable, and he had a good singing voice, his long suffering wife was played very convincingly by Maureen Nolan, who has had such a long acclaimed career. Their daughter was cute and sexy, her desire to break away from any stuffiness that might surround the daughter of a minister, was evident. Maybe her father would have preferred to see her in longer skirts, and without a boyfriend, but she was her own person.

Being a fan of Gareth Gates, I am used to seeing him make an entrance, especially when he plays Prince Charming in pantomime, and I must admit at first I didn't notice the man in the overalls, not until he spoke. I have not seen the original film, but I thought his interpretation of the character Willard is brilliant. His American accent, the drawl was just right, his facial expressions, and his eyes were spot on, and his timing, making that hillbilly character totally unforgettable.

He wore a cowboy hat, and the overalls mostly, but what a treat for the audience when he unveiled a very buff body during one of the dances . He sang just one song about his momma, which was very funny, but in FOOTLOOSE it's all about his acting, and he did an amazing job. He also proved by the end of the show, just how well he can dance.

The Cast

The whole cast were absolutely brilliant, they played their own instruments, there was no band, and they were great musicians. We had guitar, keys,, bass guitar, cello, clarinet, flute, harmonica, drums and saxophone, and it made the production seem all the more special with the actors participating.

FOOTLOOSE is a feel good musical, which is very fast moving, it is clear to see how much the actors enjoy themselves in it, and their enthusiasm is infectious, I came out of the theatre with the songs ringing in my head, and determined to book again at another venue. But don't take my word for it, go and see it for yourself, and I guarantee you'll have a great night..
