Gareth Gates commenced his November Tour this week, and I was at the Birmingham Venue to see him on Monday. We were all aware he had been ill and lost his voice, so would he be able to continue? Read on to find out what happened.

Gareth Gates was full of Glee.

Gareth Gates started his hotly anticipated Tour this week, supported by Jai Mc Dowell and the Cherry bomb Girls. His fans were all aware that last week he had been ill with a bad throat and lost his voice. This tour had already been planned for June of this year, but had to be postponed through circumstances beyond the control of Gareth or his management.

Can anyone imagine the anguish he must have suffered, knowing that this is the worst possible time that fate should strike him such an unlucky blow? But after the anguish comes the determination to do his best, to come out there and perform for the fans who loyally support him. This man never ceases to amaze me. He entered Pop Idol with the desire to achieve his dream and sing in spite of having a severe stammer, and thirteen years later he is still doing what he loves most of all, singing. Once again he was faced with a huge challenge, how to sing when his voice had temporarily deserted him.

This past week

Gareth fans follow his twitter and facebook pages, I keep up with it too as I am a moderator on his unofficial site. We were told that Gareth was resting a lot, having vocal massage and vitamin drops, in fact doing everything he could to get himself well for the start of the tour.

I felt worried for him, his voice is everything to him, and would have fully understood if he had to cancel, but I also understood that after being postponed in June, there would be a lot of disappointed fans if he did not go ahead.

Gareth knew this, and because he is always the consummate professional, he chose to go ahead. I heard that the first night in London had been a huge success, and he would therefore be appearing at the Glee Club, Birmingham on Monday on the second night.

When I took my seat I could hear how enthusiastic the crowd were, the support acts did a good job, and commented how proud they were to be supporting Gareth on his tour, and this went down very well with the fans, who clapped and cheered.

Then Gareth came on

Gareth was a hit right from the moment he appeared onstage. So many whistles, cheering and clapping from the enthusiastic crowd. His voice , although a bit husky, had not lost its purity and sincerity when he sings, and as always he had the crowd mesmerised. He sang a medley of songs from all 3 of his albums, the new songs he has written, and also surprisingly, even some classic rock songs.

He paused to lubricate his throat with water at times, and the crowd carried on singing with him, the spirit and goodwill towards him was so uplifting. He was bright and jolly as always, cleverly masking how he must be feeling. His bravery and dedication to his performance was truly inspiring.

For me the highlight of that night was when he sang whilst accompanying himself on the keyboard. He is truly a very gifted musician and has come a long way from the 17 year old Pop Idol we all remember from 2001. I wish him the very best for the remainder of his tour, and I hope he gets to rest his voice before his appearance as Prince Charming in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
