H G Wells was one of the famous science fiction writers of the 20th century. This article gives a brief insight into his life and works.

H G Wells

H G Wells or Herbert George Wells was an English author born on 21st September 1866. He is rightly called as the "Father of modern science fiction". His famous writings belong to science fiction genre. He died on 13th August 1946 in London, England.

H G Wells was born to a lower middle class family in Bromley, Kent County. He was the fourth child to his parents and was called "Bertie" in the family. His father Joseph Wells was a shopkeeper and a professional cricket player. His mother Sarah Neal worked as a maid. H G Wells married twice and had affairs with a number of women. As a youngster, he spent most of his time reading.

H G Wells was influenced by Jules Verne, another great science fiction writer. H G Well's famous science fiction writings are "The Time Machine", "The War of The Worlds", "The Island of Doctor Moreau", "The Invisible Man", "When The Sleeper Wakes" and "The First Men In The Moon". He has written several short stories and non fiction essays. He also served as the president of "International PEN (Poets, Essayists and Novelists)". In his work "The Shape of Things to Come", he had predicted that the world war would begin in the year 1940.

H G Wells was more of a socialist. It shows in his writings like "The Time Machine". He envisioned a "World State", where the society would be planned and would support the cause of science. He believed in meritocracy and did not support nationalism.

Even the great H G Wells was not spared from plagiarism charges. Florence Deeks sued H G Wells for plagiarism, claiming that he had stolen much of the content of "The Outline of History" from her work "The Web". Later on the court found him not guilty.

H G Wells' novels have inspired and entertained people of many generations.
