How to Avoid Bad Recording Contracts

It is actually quite hard to get a decent contract. We imagine a group that gets a contract with a record company and goes on to great things all over the world, but this is quite the exceptional case. The majority do not end like this and many never get anywhere at all.

Those who are new to the music business do not understand the variety of recording contracts available.

Some contracts are good and some are really bad, so you have to be careful. Always get the details of any contract checked out thoroughly by a qualified person. Go to an entertainment lawyer just to be careful or you could lose all hope of success.

Signing with a small company means small funding and promotion and you will normally be disappointed. You need to be totally clear on the terms of the contract. Remember that the small labels can do a lot less to market you than the larger labels - so do not get hooked into an indefinite contract in case a larger company comes to sign you.

Be careful of deceptive contracts - and even the simple ones should be run by your lawyer first to be sure you know what it really is. There are actually some tricksters out there who will use a contract just to get rid of a competing act with a contract that is designed just to "shelve" the band in question. Although hard to believe, this has happened in the past.

Always use an entertainment lawyer when a new contract comes your way. No matter how enthusiastic you are to be offered a contract to sign so that you can get started, be patient, or you may regret it. You could lose all your hard work if you are "shelved" or locked into a small label so that you cannot get out of for a bigger offer.

Be careful when dealing with contracts with record companies, agents, managers and promoters or you could end up doing yourself more harm than good in your career.
