Lewis Hamilton Conquers Vettel in Spain

This year is a very exciting one in Formula One. Mercedes domination of the past 3 years is over, Ferrari have stepped up to the challenge, and Vettel is proving to be a formidable rival.
Two weeks ago in Sochi, Lewis's car had balance and overheating problems, and to avoid having a non finish, he had to nurse it home without challenging anyone, and be content with fourth place.

Valterri Bottas, his team mate had an excellent day, he held of a charging Vettel after passing him and Raikennon at the start, and then went on to win the race. This is his first win, and he thoroughly deserved it. There was none more pleased than Lewis, who congratulated him warmly.

It was very close in qualifying, but in the end Lewis just pipped Vettel by less than a thousandth of a second, to take pole. It was his sixty fourth pole, only one behind Ayrton Senna. Being so close meant , although starting from pole, he was not guaranteed a win.

Bottas put in a sterling effort too to claim third, and Raikennon was fourth. The weather prediction was sunny and hot. Both Vettel and Bottas had to have new parts fitted to their cars, and Bottas had to use an older engine for the race.

Lewis ,when interviewed after qualifying said his car had much better balance than in Sochi, and to me he sounded quietly confident. But Sunday would be the day that would decide.

Lewis made a good start, but then got wheel spin, which enabled Vettel to overtake. Bottas had the same starting problem, and hopefully Mercedes will look into that to see why. So off went Vettel, and Lewis followed him, putting every effort to stay in touch with him, about two seconds behind to avoid overheating his brakes in dirty air.

At the start, Bottas accidentally hit Raikennon, who then hit Verstappen, causing the latter two to sustain damage, and they were then out of the race.

Mercedes were just about to give Lewis an early pit stop, but unexpectedly, Vettel pitted. Bottas was then in second with Ricciardo in third, and Lewis led the race.. Vettel came out behind Ricciardo, and couldn't pass straight away, and when he reached Bottas, he lost another two seconds whilst he was stuck behind him for a couple of laps. Bottas proved his merit as a team player by holding him up to help Lewis.

Later when the virtual safety car was deployed, his team got Lewis in at just the right time to change his tyres to the softer tyre, whilst Vettel had now changed to the harder tyre. Vettel was very surprised to see Lewis exit the pits as he was going past, and in a bid to stop him taking the lead pushed him wide, but luckily Lewis managed to stay on the track..

The Result

Lewis was now on softer and faster tyres, and Vettel on older slower tyres. Lewis closed in on him, he said later, he had been coming to get him, but this is a track that it is notoriously difficult to pass on, and although he had the speed, would he be able to get past?.

Then he made the move that won him the race, taking him at the end of the straight. Vettel blinked, and he was gone. . It was on lap forty four. His next difficulty would be to get those tyres, that had already seen so much action, and ducking and diving, to the end of the race. He still had over twenty laps to go.

I was very sorry to see Bottas retire with engine failure, he truly helped towards the win.

But not only did Lewis manage that, he also did the fastest lap, and reigned supreme in Spain this year with pole position, fastest lap, and race win. This was his fifty fifth race win, and he is now second only to Schumaker in the all time great list.

The battle for supremacy between Lewis and Vettel will continue, two teams with similar pace, and two world champions against each other. What a nail biting and exciting year it will be.
