Lewis Hamilton danced in the Rain at Hockenheim

Lady luck has not been with the Mercedes team lately, with both drivers having a dnf in Austria, and also both being taken out by Raikenon and Vettel at the start, and having to battle their way back up to the front. Lewis Hamilton did a remarkable job to battle back to 2nd at his home grand prix, but for him, that was not enough ,he wanted to win it for his fans, as he has done in many successive years.

So he went to Germany this weekend with a resolve so strong, and he believed he could win this time. He looked as though he had good pace in practice, although as usual, Ferrari were sandbanging, and not showing their true pace.

The weather was set to be very changeable all weekend, with rain predicted for qualifying. Rain is always the best scenario for Lewis, as he excels in varying conditions, and is master of the wet.

Qualifying

Whilst he was out in the first part of qualifying, his car went over some bumps, and he lost his steering. It was later described as a hydraulic issue, not caused by the bumps, it was the issue that had caused him to lose control and go over the bumps.

This was devastating news, as he had been on a very fast lap, but with his car damaged, he could no longer take part in qualifying. The time he had set would mean he would be starting 14th on the grid. Vettel took a very commanding pole, Bottas 2nd, and Raikenon 3rd

He cut a very dejected figure when he was trying to push his car back to the pits, in a vain attempt to see if it could be fixed, as such is his drive that he never gives up. Many people must have wondered just when his run of bad luck would finally end.

But Lewis has such a strong mentality that he is able to bring himself back from the brink of despair, which showed when he was kneeling by his car, to such a fighting spirit, and a determination to succeed, he is quickly able to emerge from the dark clouds.

Race day

Race day was a grey one at the start of the race, with rain threatening any time soon. Lewis started the race on soft tyres, and although he had to fight his way up the grid, it was remarkable to see how well he managed to look after them. Most of the other drivers had started on supersoft, which are faster, but don't last as long.

He had made it up to 5th place, and then the drivers started to come in for pIt stops. He stayed out, and it wasn't until lap42, that he came in to change them. Vettel had a commanding lead at the front, and Raikenon had overtaken Bottas, who was 3rd, next came Verstappen and then Lewis. Then the rain started to fall even heavier, and there was a dive back into the pits for wet weather tyres.

It was about lap 51, with rain coming down that Vettel took himself off and into the gravel, much to the dismay of the German crowd. He admitted later it was a schoolboy error, a small mistake he called it, but that small mistake cost him any points at all, and his lead in the world championship. Previous to that, Lewis had been catching him at 2 seconds per lap, and there was no doubt he must have feared being overtaken. The pressure was on.

When the drivers went back into the pits Lewis was also called in, but the radio message was very unclear, and he was in doubt because he knew his tyres were still good. So he cut across the grass, and safely rejoined the track, and was now leading the other cars. Later this was to be the subject of a stewards inquiry, which resulted in no action other than a reprimand .

Lewis brought his car home safely through the rainy conditions, whereas some of the other cars were seen to spin. He always prefers wet races, he says they are more challenging. Bottas tried to challenge him at one point, didn't succeed, and then the nervous Mercedes team asked him to hold position, a decision he accepted was right, as they needed maximum points, and could not afford to lose either of their drivers.

Bottas was 2nd, Raikenon 3rd and Verstappen 4th. The drive by Lewis has been described as epic, and the best of his career, which proves that even if you haven't got the fastest car, with skill and determination, you can still achieve what you wanted to. With the Ferrari engine having so much more power most people are still expecting them to win the championship but I am not, Mercedes have Lewis, and he will fight to the very last race at Abu Dhabi. GO LEWIS!
