Mercedes had a wake up call in the last Grand Prix when Ferrari found new form with Sebastian Vettel taking his First win with his new team. Could Mercedes match them in China? Read on to find out more.

Lewis Hamilton Dominates China

Two weeks ago, after qualifying in pole position, Lewis Hamilton was beaten into second place by Vettel, whilst Rosberg had to be content with third. The improved pace of the Ferrari was a shock to Mercedes, and also a wake_up call, as Toto Wolff explained, they had the wrong strategy, and also incorrect tyres, which compromised their ability to match the pace.

Vettel took a very creditable win , his first in his new team, and Lewis as always, was the first to congratulate him. Many people were now delighted that the Ferrari had improved so much, including Lewis, as he enjoys the challenge of fighting to win his races.

Practice and Qualifying

In China this last weekend Lewis dominated each practice session, on long and short runs his car was supreme. It was the same in qualifying, he set a pace that no-one could match, and although he made an error on his final run, and could not improve, a very exasperated Rosberg was told he had been beaten by four thousandths of a second into second place.

Lewis spoke afterwards how it would be a tough race, especially with tyre degradation, so he knew how important it would be to look after his tyres. Later his team gave him advice on how to preserve his tyres in the race to avoid degradation.

Then came the Race

Lewis got a good start, and for the first part of the race, he kept his team mate behind him by just over a second. Rosberg then radioed to his team complaining that Lewis was driving too slowly, and he felt in danger from Vettel behind, to lose his place.

The team aske Lewis to quicken his pace, which he dutifully did, pulling out a lead of over six seconds, but as the safety car was deployed during the last lap, although he still won, the gap was much smaller.

Afterwards a very angry Rosberg, when interviewed, accused Lewis of driving too slowly and threatening his position. Toto Wolff and several others vociferously defended Lewis, saying he was following team instructions, and had driven a perfect race. Lewis himself also denied the accusation.

There is every sign that the intense rivalry from last year continues at Mercedes, and what Rosberg needs to do now is qualify first and win a race, but I am sure Lewis will be fighting him all the way.

I am a fan of F1 and admire all the efforts of the drivers.
Meredes should not be surprised at Vettel's and Ferrari's ambition, Vettel is a great driver and with a good car would give the Mercedes team a good run for their money.

Your guy, Lewis, might have been delighted that Ferrari improved to provide a welcome challenge, but I think that's the gentlemanly way Lewis chose to gloss over his loss. It's not fun to lose, because they are all in it to win.

I just love your racing reports, Carol!

I agree LeRain, but Lewis wants to fight for his wins, just like he fought against unreliability issues with his car last year to become world champion.
