In Monza on Saturday, it was pouring with rain, and qualifying was stopped and started several times. After taking a dominant pole position of over one second, and breaking Schumaker's record of 68 poles, could Lewis Hamilton convert it to a race win? Read on to find out more.

Lewis Hamilton Reigns in Monza

The weather for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, is usually fine, but on Saturday qualifying was blighted by torrential rain. After being postponed, finally it took place, and it was clear to see that the Ferraris were struggling with the wet conditions. Lewis Hamilton was unfazed by the weather, and in Q3 he posted a pole position time over a second faster than anyone else. This was his 69th pole, he is now the fastest man ever, having eclipsed Schumaker's longstanding record of 68.

Raikenon and Vettel only managed 7th and 8th, but with Ricciardo and Verstappen, who beat them, starting from the back of the grid because of engine penalties, they would both move up the grid two places. Vettel was confident they would have the pace the next day in fine weather to fight for the win.

Lewis always prefers to let his driving do the talking, but he did mischievously say, he hoped he could win, and spoil their party.

On Raceday

The weather was fine and sunny on race day. When they lined up for lights out Lewis had a hiccup with a bit of wheel spin at the start, but he defended his position from Stroll and Ocon behind him, and then pulled away.

Further down the field in 4th Bottas also had wheel spin, and lost a position to Raikenon, but later regained it when Raikenon complained that there was something wrong with the back end of his car. He wasted little time in overtaking Stroll and Ocon, and was then second to Lewis. Lewis did enough to keep him behind, and cruised to a dominant victory. His lead was never threatened at any time, and he was able to turn down his engine, and coast to the end, with Bottas a very creditable 2nd. Another strong performance came from Ricciardo, who worked his way up to 4th after starting from the back of the grid.

After being such a strong match for them at Spa, it was clear early on, that Ferrari were struggling. Vettel did make it into 3rd position, but he finished over 36 seconds behind Lewis. He was able to pass Kimi because there was something wrong with Kimi's car, but he was no match for the pace of Mercedes. This seemed to be a track where the Ferrari really struggled.

Afterwards

When Lewis and Bottas finished, they went round side by side doing a lap of honour. But the Ferrari fans had wanted Vettel to win, especially as it was Ferrari's 70th birthday celebrations.

So when the presentation of trophies took place, the Ferrari fans booed both Lewis and Bottas, and then greeted Vettel with rapturous applause. Lewis handled the situation very diplomatically, and did not take offence at the boos. He says he understands the passion of the Ferrari fans, and his win had spoiled their party. This victory puts him at the top of the drivers championship by just 3 points, but for the first time this year.

The next race at Singapore has proved in the past to be a very difficult track for Mercedes, and with the momentum swinging very much his way at the moment by winning two back to back races, Lewis has elected to test Pirelli tyres in France this week. He wants to do everything he can to keep his championship hopes alive.

All his fans will be watching with rapt attention, as with the few races left, the pendulum can swing either way.
GOOD LUCK LEWIS!
