After a stunning pole lap that saw him equal Michael Schumaker with most poles ever, could Lewis go on and win the race? Read on to find out more

Lewis Hamilton Spars in Spa

Fresh from the summer break, with a championship lead deficit of fourteen points, Lewis Hamilton declared he was out for blood this weekend. And he proved it on qualifying day when it mattered. He had not dominated practice, and his team mate Bottas had appeared to be struggling even more, which was a surprise on a track where it appeared to be one that would suit Mercedes more than Ferrari.

But undaunted by this Lewis did a stunning pole lap, which not only broke the record, but also equalled Michael Schumakers total of Sixty eight, and no doubt, by the end of this season, he will be out ahead on his own, the fastest pole lap driver ever Vette had appeared to struggle at first, but after Raikenon aborted his lap, was able to benefit from the tow.

Ross Braun delivered a message from Michael's family, congratulating Lewis, who was very emotional, and he responded by saying how he was praying for his recovery after a skiing accident some four years ago, and also heralding him as the great driver that he was.

Although buoyed up by getting pole position, Lewis was also wary, as during the long runs, it had been clear to see that Ferrari were stronger and quicker. So he knew he would have to fight to the end to win the race, and it would not just be a case of driving off ahead of everyone.

Race day

At the start, Lewis managed to pull ahead, but Vettel was right there with him. Most of the time he was just over a second behind, but never more than two seconds. Lewis could not shake him off, and so the sparring began, Vettel was waiting for Lewis to make a mistake, and Lewis was hoping that Vettel would make one, so he could have more of a comfortable lead. He was being shadowed and he knew it, and had to keep his cool.

It was a very disappointing day for Max Verstappen, as his engine failed on lap eight, much to the disappointment of the Dutch fans who had come to see him. He is now finding his car so unreliable, with many non finishes this year.

Later in the race a safety car came out, which was very stressful for Lewis, because the restart could give Vettel, who was on the faster tyre, an opportunity to overtake him. He complained, saying it should have been a virtual safety car, but it seemed the stewards wanted to see a race between the two multiple world champions.

As expected, at the restart, Vettel made his move, but Lewis was having none of it, he expertly held him off, and he kept him at bay to go on and win the race. The fact that he did so , when he was running on a slower tyre is testament to the fact that although Ferrari have the faster car, Lewis is the more skilful driver. Vettel lost a couple of chances of overtaking him, simply by getting too close, and Lewis could capitalise on that, and he did. His racecraft is second to none, so Vettel had to settle for second.

Who came Third?

Bottas had qualified in third place, but just didn't seem to have the pace this week to keep up. Raikenon received a penalty for not slowing for yellow flags, but still managed to get fourth place.

Both Ricciardo and Raikenon overtook Bottas after the safety car restart, so he ended up fifth, and Ricciardo was third, which completed the podium places. Once again Ricciardo had benefitted because his team mate didn't finish, as Max had out qualified him on Saturday.

Lewis took his fifty eighth win, and he explained after how hard the race had been. He said he had to do qualifying laps to keep Vettel behind, such was the pace of the Ferrari. He is now seven points behind him, with five wins to Vettel's four.

This week they head to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix, and once again, he knows how tight it will be as the bends there will suit Ferrari. Lewis has won there in the past, but so has Vettel. I think if Mercedes want him to win the drivers championship, they will need to up their development, as Ferrari seem to have a car that performs well at all tracks, and doesn't mind the dirty air. But one thing I do know, Lewis will fight like a tiger to the end, simply because he is Lewis Hamilton, our British Champion.
