After winning the Russian Grand Prix two weeks ago, Lewis Hamilton only needed two points more than his team mate Rosberg, or nine more than Vettel to clinch his 3rd world championship, with 3 races of the season still to go. Read on to find out more.

Lewis Hamilton Takes 3rd World Title

If anyone had asked me ten years ago if I would have been a fan of Formula one, I would have laughed at them. Sitting in a room with the curtains closed on a Sunday afternoon watching cards whizz round a track, was not my idea of fun.

But then I saw Lewis Hamilton coming round the track in 2008, he had to overtake to win the title, and that is exactly what he did, on the last bend, to clinch the title by one point. I knew then I was looking at someone very special, not just as a driver, but as a man, his charisma draws so many to him, and over the years I have watched his fan base grow and grow.

The next few years must have been very frustrating for him, they certainly were for me, as Mc Laren consistently failed to give him a fast and reliable car. There were so many races he had to retire, and those he did win he had to really fight for. But my faith in him was unshaken, I knew there would be more to come.

He moved to Mercedes

In 2013 Lewis moved to Mercedes amid much criticism from many people. During his first season he became accustomed to the car, and then in 2014, he fought from behind Rosberg all through the season to take his second world championship. He had 3 non finishes, his engine caught on fire, and lots of bad luck that year, but this only increased his desire to win. At the final race at Abu Dhabi he drove to victory.

It is his courage and passion for the sport that holds me enthralled, and because of him I now have a new respect for Formula One racing, these men go out and battle to win, sometimes in not very nice weather conditions, and show such fearlessness, it is truly amazing.

This year started well for him. He won in Australia, then China and Malaysia, but not only did he win, he claimed almost every pole position too. Rosberg upped his game in an effort to beat Lewis, and he won the Austrian and Spanish Grand Prix.

The biggest shock of all was how much Vettel had improved this year. He had struggled at Red Bull last year, being frequently beaten by his team mate Ricciardo, but after joining Ferrari, he took 3 very creditable wins, and fought the two Mercedes drivers all the way.

The Second part of the Season

When the mid summer break came, Lewis was still ahead of Rosberg by over 50 points. Then they both had a non finish. Rosberg started to achieve pole positions, and clinched the last 3, but Lewis went on to win the races.

So on Sunday he went into the American Grand prix with only two points needed to beat Rosberg, and nine to beat Vettel. If he could do that, it would mean that even if he was out of the last three races, he would still remain world champion.

But the weekend sessions were tricky ones. Constant rain and storms halted practice sessions, although Lewis went fastest at the last one. Then rain interrupted qualifying, and Rosberg who had gone fastest then got pole position, and Lewis expressed his regret that they had not been able to finish that session.

The Race

When the lights went out Lewis made a blistering start, passing Rosberg at the first bend. But he was not going to have the race all his own way, because Kyviat and Ricciardo were in hot pursuit, and it was soon clear to see that Lewis was struggling to keep them behind him.

He led for about twenty laps, then it was the turn of Ricciardo. Meanwhile Rosberg was trying to move up from fifth. Eventually Lewis had to come in again for tyres as he was struggling, safety cars came out, as there were a couple of incidents, and at the latter stages of the race, he found himself in second place behind Rosberg.

He gradually got nearer and nearer, then sat right behind him. This unnerved Rosberg, as he made a mistake and ran wide, which allowed Lewis to sweep past. Lewis said afterwards he was disappointed that he had been denied wheel to wheel combat with his team mate.

After that the race was his, he only had to cruise home to pick up his 3rd world title. He has broken all sorts of records this week, and remains the first British man to win back to back drivers titles. I see more to come from him, he was even stronger this year than last. His name will go down in history as being one of the greats of all time, and I am so pleased that it has happened in my lifetime. This man makes me proud to be British.

I was lucky to watch the race on BBC and it was a sincere pleasure to watch history being made, the race was wonderful and all the drivers performed so well. It was a well deserved victory for Lewis who always puts all he has into his races.

A lovely recap of F1 history itself, thanks Carol. I follow this sport mostly through you!

Lewis is already touted as one of the greatest. Alain Prost was a familiar name for me, then Senna and Schumacher. Now Lewis is spoken in the same breath as them - siva
