After the woes of Monaco, when Mercedes found lack of pace and grip, they came back fighting at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. Could Lewis Hamilton clinch his 6th win there? Read on to find out more.

Lewis Hamilton's Mega Weekend in Canada

Two weeks ago, a very disappointed Bottas and Lewis Hamilton finished off the podium for the first time this year, in 4th and 7th place in Monaco. Lewis had started in 13th position, but with a car that lacked grip, and tyres that would not work properly it was a hard race for both of them, and it is to his credit that he managed to salvage a few points that day.

Since then Mercedes have worked constantly to analyse and understand why their car as Toto Wolff described, is a "diva". This has given Vettel of Ferrari, which has none such problems, the chance to pull ahead by 25 points. This year Ferrari is the car to beat, although Mercedes is fast, its unpredictability with balance and tyre temperatures has given Mercedes a lot of extra work to do to catch up.

Practice and Qualifying.

It appeared after practice, that the car setup was better, as both teams were very close on pace. But it was during qualifying, that much of the drama happened. For Sessions Q! and Q2, it was nip and tuck between both teams.

But Lewis had come to Montreal with his sights firmly set on pole position, and a race win, on a circuit where he has already won 5 times before. In Q3 He secured a banker lap in 1mins 11s, which broke the record previously held. Vettel tried to match him, and came within 4 thousandths of a second. But this fired Lewis up even more, and he did an even faster lap, which was over 3 tenths of a second faster. Vettel tried, and failed to better it, so Lewis now had pole position.

This was his 65th pole, which equalled his hero, Ayrton Senna, and to mark this special occasion, and it was a complete surprise to Lewis, he was presented with a special helmet of his idols's for achieving this by the family.. Only one man stands between him and being top, that is Schumaker, so maybe later this year, Lewis will have surpassed him as well.

His Emotions

It was clear to see how moved he was to receive this tribute, and in fact many of his fans were moved to tears to see the accolade their hero so richly deserved. So saturday belonged to him, and it made him want so much to win the race on Sunday, if his car would only give him the pace and reliability needed.

His start was good, and Vettel was unable to overtake him, which is what he had been hoping for. But the start of the day had to go to Verstappen, who launched himself from 5th up to 2nd, leaving Vettel for dust. But sadly for Verstappen, his car developed problems, and he had to retire on lap 11.

Vettel had been unfortunate to have his wing clipped by Verstappen at the start, which saw him pit early, and go to the back of the field. Bottas moved up to 2nd when Verstappen retired, and Ricciardo eventually made third. Raikennon had problems with his tyres on this race, so was not able to deliver a great performance.

Bottas made his pit stop before Lewis, and they both had different strategies and tyre choices. Lewis led the race on every lap, and just drove to the end superbly, never troubled by anyone, and was over 19 seconds ahead of Bottas at the end.

His bad luck meant Vettel had his work cut out, he battled his way up the field to a very creditable 4th, and like the Mercedes last time, Ferrari was unable to get either of their cars on the podium.

Ricciardo took advantage of Verstappen's demise, by claiming 3rd spot on the podium, his 3rd successive race where he has been up there. He was trying to invite people to drink champagne from his shoe, not everyone wanted to drink his sweat.

Mercedes were delighted with both of their drivers, as you can't get better than 1 and 2 This elevated Mercedes to the top of the constructors championship standings. Lewis did his 2nd hat trick of the season, as like in China, he qualified on pole, won the race, and set the fastest time. He had also now cut Vettel's championship lead from 25 points ahead down to 12. This had buoyed the team up and given them back confidence, so hopefully in 2 weeks, when they got to Baku, they can get another good result.
