Mercedes discovered during practice and qualifying, that their car just didn't go in the hot conditions of Bahrain. Would Ferrari prevail again, or could Red Bull challenge them all? Read on to find out what happened.

Lewis Hamilton was Brave in Bahrain

After a software glitch, that lost him a dominant win in the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago, Lewis Hamilton headed to Bahrain, anxious to stop Ferrari, and Vettel from claiming another win. But it was clear to see in practice and qualifying, that the Mercedes car did not perform well in hot conditions, they could not get the tyres to work for them, and Lewis and Valtteri both struggled. Eventually they qualified with Valteri 3rd and Lewis 4th, but because of an oil leak, which was discovered after Australia, Lewis had to have an unscheduled gear box change, which carried a penalty with it. He was relegated 5 places down on the starting grid, which meant he had to start from 9th position.

Vettel did a superb qualifying lap to take pole position, with Raikennon right next to him in P2. Lewis congratulated him, but after admitting it had been a poor weekend for him, he vowed to make up as many places in the race as he could, to ensure damage limitation to his 5th title hopes.

On Raceday

Vettel made a good start, but so did Valtteri, overtaking Raikennon to claim 2nd place. To give him his due he stuck with him for the entire race, and Vettel was not able to make the break. In the meantime, Lewis initially made a good start, and gained a few places briefly, but was then boxed in and dropped back. It was clear to see he was taking it easy so as not to risk being out of the race right at the beginning.

There was a virtual safety car, so initially he was not able to make much headway, but once it came in, he set himself the task of climbing up the grid. This was nearly ruined by a desperate and dangerous move by Verstappen, who left the racing line and tried to run him of the track. Lewis was not going to give in to a much less experienced driver, so in the end, Max had a puncture, and although he went in for a tyre change, and then came out, he was ordered by the team to retire the car.

Because of his youth, Verstappen is proving to be very reckless, he is fast, but he needs to learn racecraft, and it is no wonder that Lewis was annoyed later, as he had shown him no respect whatsoever by trying to run him off the track. When Rosberg did this in 2016, he went to the stewards and got a penalty, its a dirty way to drive, but some drivers apparently think its the only way to beat their rivals. Max needs to watch Lewis driving, and learn something about racecraft, Lewis is a hard but fair, racer, and would never run anyone off the track in this manner.

What Happened Next

The race was full of drama, as first both of the Red Bulls were out. Ricciardo's car simply stopped on track. Lewis climbed steadily up to 4th place, and the highlight of the day had to be his move in overtaking 3 cars at once, Alonso and Hulkenberg being two of the drivers in the mix. And he managed it without touching any of them, or ruining anyone's race. It was a very brave move.

Later in the race, although Ferrari had planed 2 stops, it became apparent that they would lose the race if they went in again. Lewis had tyres to last him until the end of the race, but both Ferraris were on softs. Ferrari responded by testing the water and bringing Raikennon in. But a bizarre incident with his tyres not only saw him accidentally knock a pit crew member down, who sadly sustained a broken leg, but it also finished his own race. Now vettel was on his own with tyres that might not last, Bottas was getting closer, and Lewis was also doing his best to catch up from quite a distance.

But the racing Gods were with Vettel, his tyres did not let him down, and although Bottas finished 0.6 seconds only behind him, he could not get past, and had to settle for 2nd. Lewis did not have enough laps to make up the time and pose a threat, but nevertheless, he made it onto the podium from 9th to 3rd was a good result. Pierre Gasly also had a great drive, coming 4th.

Vettel has now won back to back races, but that means nothing, as Lewis didn't emerge ahead of him until the second part of the season last year. They are both hungry for a 5th title, and it will be a dramatic and exciting year, especially if Red Bull can solve their woes, and be in the mix.

I sincerely hope the pit man with the broken leg recovers quickly, nobody likes to see someone suffer like this. The Ferrari team were fined for this incident, so hopefully it won't happen again.
