After finishing a disappointing 5th In Canada, without a new engine, and hampered by an overheating problem, Could Lewis Hamilton return to winning ways in France. More importantly, could Mercedes give him a new updated and reliable engine? Read on to find out more.

Lewis Hamilton was Fantastique in France

When Lewis Hamilton competed in Canada, two weeks ago, at a track he has owned with many wins over the years, not only did he have an old engine, as the New Mercedes one had quality problems, but he also had an overheating issue, which dogged him all through the race.

He declared himself relieved to get 5th place, as he literally had to nurse his car home, unsure all the time whether he would be able to get through to the end. This difficulty left him unable to properly challenge anyone, and saw Vettel take his 3rd victory of the year.

But as always Lewis was loyal to his mechanics, and however disappointed he must have felt inside, he reminded everyone WE WIN AND LOSE TOGETHER, which has always been his attitude during his very long and successfulcareer.

Then Came France

The French Grand Prix came back onto the calendar after an absence of many years. As far as the current drivers go, it was a new track for everyone, so no-one knew what to expect. But Mercedes finally announce on Friday that they were happy to launch their new upgraded engine, so Lewis and Bottas were able to use it for practice.

All through practice 1 and 2, Lewis was top, and Valteri was not that far behind. They declared themselves very happy with their new engine, and Lewis was buoyed up by his new engine, and excited to learn a new track.

He carried this confidence through to qualifying, and snatched pole from Valteri, as it was very close. Vettel had to settle for 3rd, being some 3 tenths off the pace. This was a new record for Lewis, as he has qualified on pole at every circuit on the calendar now, a feat that no other driver before has ever achieved.

The Race

Lewis had a good start, as did Valteri, and so did Vettel, but he didn't think about where to position his car safely, so when he found himself heading towards Valteri, he tried in vain to brake, and ended up hitting him and spinning him around. Both cars sustained damage, and had to pit, Vettel for a new wing, and Valteri had a puncture, but also damaged the floor of his car, which affected his pace all through the race.

Lewis just managed to avoid the carnage, and then a safety car was deployed., Vettel was handed a 5 second penalty, which some people thought was too lenient.

So With Valtteri and Sebastian playing catchup through the field after the safety car came in, Lewis gradually pulled away from Verstappen, maintaining about a four second gap for most of the time. His pit stop was fast, and his tyres lasted well, and at no time did he look under threat from anyone else. It was a dominant win, which must have been a huge boost to him after the woes of Canada.

Max maintained 2nd position, and a good drive from Raikennon saw him take the third step of the podium. Vettel had to settle for 5th, and Ricciardo was 4th. Sadly for Valterri his car lacked pace, and he fought hard to get himself up to 7th place. I think everyone felt sorry for him, especially as Vettel, who took him out, ended up several places ahead of him. Mercedes and Lewis were left to rue the fact that without the accident, it could have been 1st and 2nd place for their drivers.

This weekend Formula One moves to Austria, with a power track, so it will be interesting to see how everyone fares there. Although Ferrari are the favourites, I am sure that with their new engines, Lewis and Valterri will give them a good fight
