After doing the fastest lap in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix yesterday, Lewis Hamilton said it would take a miracle to win, as the Mercedes car is struggling for pace on the Pirelli tyres. Read on to find out what happened.

Lewis Hamilton was Hunga-r-y Today

Yesterday saw Lewis Hamilton claim his 4th pole position this year in his new team, and the second consecutive one. There is no doubt that Lewis is the fastest man in the world over one lap, he continually proves it, but after what would seem to have the race sewn up, sadly that is not the case.

This is Lewis's first year at Mercedes, which until now was an ailing team. Even the great Michael Schumaker, who came out of retirement to try and help them to raise the profile, failed, leaving at the end of 2012. But Lewis has worked with the team, Ross Braun the team principal has publicly praised him for his input, and the hard work that he puts in to be the best.

Lewis has rewarded him by managing to get on the podium several times, and picking up points for the team every time he races. He has also managed to qualify in pole position no less than 4 times this season, but sadly this is where the glory ends.

The tyres used by all the teams are Pirelli, and although they have done extensive testing to try and fix the problem, it seems that these tyres do not suit the Mercedes car, they wear out very quickly, and the car lacks pace. So the jubilation that Lewis has felt several times this year, has been short lived, as he knows that in the race, tyre degradation will be a huge problem.

What About Today?

Today 28th July 2013 saw him line up at the front of the grid, with Vettel in his Red Bull breathing down his neck in P2. Lewis had already said that it would take a miracle to win today, as a fan, that made my heart ache, because if anyone deserved to win, it was Lewis. It is unusual to see Lewis downhearted, he is a fighter, with huge determination, but he was being honest, he would put his all into it as he always does, but if his car hasn't got the performance, he needs to say, because otherwise he feels like he's letting his fans down.

When the lights went out, Lewis got off to a fine start. Vettel on the other hand got sandwiched between Raikennon and Grosjean of the Lotus team, although eventually he did manage to maintain his position. Lewis looked to be cruising comfortably, and staying far enough ahead of him to stave off any threat of an attack. He maintained that lead until he went in for his first pit stop.

When Lewis came out from his pit stop, he had to work his way up the track again, as other drivers had not pitted, and he was then second to Mark Webber, who had still not pitted. Vettel had made his pit stop also, and wanted to get back at the front with Lewis, but he couldn't get past Jenson Button, who had been passed by Lewis earlier. He tried for many laps, and this was very advantageous for Lewis, because it allowed him to build up about a six second lead, which was so essential because the Red Bull car has such speed in the race.

Then Webber pitted

Webber pitted, and then Lewis once more took up the lead. He maintained that lead for the rest of the race, appearing very cool calm and collected, making his car work, and his tyres, effortlessly.

Behind him Vettel with the faster car became increasingly more agitated when he could make no impression on him, and was unable to get past other slower cars to challenge the supremacy of Lewis. But such was the determination of Lewis to get his first win of the season , he hasn't got the fastest car, and he knows it, but he used it in the right way to win the race, and he remained unruffled, especially after each pit stop, when he had the job of once more overtaking , and getting higher up the field. Eventually Raikennon, claimed 2nd place, and Vettel had to settle for 3rd

It was a truly remarkable win, from someone who has taken the reputation of Mercedes to dizzy heights in just a few short months this year. In a speech afterwards he emotionally dedicated his win to Nicole, who he has apparently split from after 5 years together.

Somehow I believe that after she finishes her X factor duties, and he ends the season in November, they will be back on again. It's hard to maintain a relationship when your careers take you in opposite directions, but with these two, just watch this space.

Well done Lewis I am so proud of you, and I have every faith in your ability, show Vettel what you are made of again and again! xxx
