We have lost a great lady, to whom no tribute will suffice to account for her greatness as an author, a poet, a civil rights leader, and a person.

Maya Angelou

"You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise."

The world is a lesser and sadder place today
For we have lost a great, great lady
"I know why the caged bird sings"
She once wrote, celebrating
The undying hope and spirit of her people

Her eloquence, perhaps not seen
Since James Baldwin and Langston Hughes
Always summoned the best within us
Her message resounded far and wide
"Stand up, be proud and meet life with dignity"

Quotes

The greatness of this remarkable woman is seen in her prolific writings and in the many conversations she had with those who interviewed her through the years. Here is a small sampling:

"I believe each of us comes from the creator trailing wisps of glory."

"You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them."

"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style."

"The need for change bulldozed a road down the center of my mind."

"Try to be a rainbow to someone's cloud."

She always summoned us to what's possible

Maya Angelou knew the inherent value and goodness that resides within every human being, and she always reminded us of just that:

"One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest."

Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope."

"We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated."

"Nothing can dim the light that shines from within."

Dearest Maya, you now walk with angels. How you have blessed us every moment you were here.

Thanks for this. She's from Arkansas, my state. I wanted to write about it, but was just at a loss for words. It affected me more than I would have expected. I am super grateful that a writer of your calibre has covered the event for Wikinut.
