What a very moving episode of Eastenders tonight, with the exit of Pat Butcher! Read on to find out more.

Pat Butcher's Finest Moment

When I heard that Pat Butcher, played by actress Pam St Clement, was making her exit from Eastenders with a story line that involved terminal cancer, I was n’t sure I wanted to watch it. Having just celebrated Christmas and the New Year, could I really stomach an hour of Pat on her deathbed surrounded by weeping friends and family?

I have always enjoyed following Pat, a very iconic figure on the soap, having been one of the most longest serving actors. I found her very interesting. She had been married 4 times, but only ever truly loved Frank, and still did, even on her deathbed. She had previously been a prostitute, neglecting her sons in favour of bedding men for money.

But none of us are perfect

But Pat was so human, she did love her children, she needed money to care for them, but of course that didn’t stop her boys from growing up to be bitter and feeling unloved. Her step daughter Janine was also very screwed up because of her father Frank deserting her, so Pat suffered many insults and jibes from her without complaint, because deep down she loved the little girl, she was like the daughter she never had.

In later years Pat more than redeemed herself. She became a loving grandmother to Ricky and Bianca’s children. Her regrets about her own sons were apparent, and she frequently wished she could have her time over again and do things differently.

What an incredible slice of real life this was. How many times have I wished myself that I could go back and change the things I have done? Life is a continual learning curve for all of us, and the Pat Butcher that I have followed in recent years was a no nonsense, honest , and caring person, whom I had a great respect for. Yes she made her mistakes, but they were behind her now, and life moves on.

So much resentment was still there

However, like all good soaps, her son David still harboured resentment, as did Janine, who came marching round to repossess her house because she had defaulted on a loan. To me, seeing Pat finally make her peace with David and Janine was one of the most moving scenes I have ever watched. It happens so often in life, people bear grudges, and it takes a brave person to accept what cannot be changed and move on.

I would like to thank the producers and actors of Eastenders for sympathetically portraying a very emotional storyline. The whole thing was brilliantly done, especially by Pat, alias Pam St Clements, it was most definitely her finest hour
