Death of Pope Benedict I

Today, 30 July, we remember Pope Benedict I who passed away in the year 579 A.D. He was the pontiff of the undivided Catholic Church only for four years. He headed the Church from 2 June 575 until his death on 30 July, 579.

History records him as the first Pope with the name Benedict. The name “Benedict” means “blessed”. The historical records of the Catholic Church say that Pope Benedict I might have selected the name from Saint Benedict of Nursia, the founder of the Benedictine monastic movement.

Pope Benedict I was was elected as the pope of the church during a very critical period that was known as “the ravages of the Lombards”.

Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI chose his name as Benedict because of this historical point that the church was facing a great crisis during the time of Pope Benedict I and also the World War I crisis that Pope Benedict XV had to face. Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI felt that the Catholic Church is under a great turmoil.

The Lombard problem and election of Pope Benedict I

The Lombards who are said to have migrated from Scandinavia moved down into Italy by the end of the fifth century. The wars between them and the Byzantine Empire created great problems in normal live and communicate. The Lombard warriors threatened the survival of Rome. The war between the Lombard King Albion and the Gepids at the Battle of Asfeld in 567 paved way for the entry of the Lombards into Southern Italy. With the support of surrounding kingdoms the Lombards established their Regnum Italicum which means “Kingdom of Italy”. These political problems affected the communication and the church proceedings.

Election and death of Pope Benedict I

Pope John III, the predecessor of Pope Benedict I died on 14 July 574 A.D. The conclave elected Pope Benedict I within days. But the confirmation of his election had to come from the Byzantine Emperor. The papal throne was vacant for eleven months between the election and the confirmation of the election. It was only on 2 June 575 that the imperial confirmation came and Pope Benedict was instituted as pope.

Pope Benedict I had to face many problems in and out of the church. The pressure of papacy on his shoulders caused his death on 30 July, 579.
