Rooney Mania. Will He Go?

Wayne Rooney: you may Love or Hate him, but he cannot be ignored.

Wayne Rooney.

Ever since Wayne Rooney scored a “great goal” for Everton against Arsenal, the words Rooney and Mania have been fully wed locked. In the Euros of 2004 he got two against Croatia, and was a big hero. I recall my work’s IT section plastering his name all over our computers. “Happy Rooney Year” or something. Today he has filled all the newspapers with his transfer request.

To be fair, in those early years he was a very exciting young player. An old fashioned English (Irish?) centre-forward: powerful, all-action, good header, all with some clever finesse. Sad to see him struggle at the latest World Cup. Since March really. I say that as a lifelong Leeds United supporter, which shows I can be unbiased.

Like his present manager Fergie, I am at a loss to explain why he wants to leave Old Trafford. Love to hate them, but Manchester United have a great tradition, forged by Busby, Best, Charlton and Law.

Having said that, Fergie may be a great leader, but like many great leaders he is a bully boy. Remember how he kicked that boot at Beckham, got rid of Jap Stam for writing a book and even fell out with Roy Keane. To be honest, Wayne looks a bully too, but how many of those can you have in town? Well, the United half anyway. There’s a nasty thought for Man U fans: Rooney for City!

Wayne’s private life hasn’t helped of course. More mania about that of course. A negative mania we might say. Mania, mania, mania. As bad as The Beatles. All for, as I said earlier, an old fashioned centre-forward of international class. Why he should ask for more than £100,000 per week in a time of national financial crisis, only he knows (and his “advisers). I’m on £10,000 per year now. Still, it all sells newspapers I suppose.
