Though the Indian Premier League is known for power-hitting batting, the irony is that, the bowlers have performed better in the history of the league.

The IPL is a bowlers’ paradise

Who says the IPL is a batsman’s game? The very format of a T20 game is nothing but entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. No doubt, there are power hitters like Chris Gayle, Kierron Pollard, David Warner, Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist who have had blistering knocks in the Indian Premier League and proved to be entertainers for whom people pay to watch.
This is the fifth season staring at the end of the tournament. There are some startling facts about the batting records. To sum it all, the team that had the highest run getter, hasn't won the title even once.
Shaun Marsh of the Punjab team was the top scorer in the first season - 2008. However, the team he represented lost in the semis.
In 2009 Matthew Hayden top scored in the tournament. He played for Chennai, who also lost in the semis like Punjab. The master himself - Sachin Tendulkar scored the most runs in the third season. His team, Mumbai Indians was the runners up. Team Bangalore's Chris Gayle was the leading rum scorer in the last edition. However he could not give victory to his team that finished the runners-up.
This year too Gayle represented Bangalore. But the results were even horrific, as Bangalore didn't even reach the knockout stage - the playoffs. Gayle scored 733 runs in 16 matches. Scoring at a staggering average of 61.08, the big man scored at an amazing strike rate of 160.74.
On the other hand, the bowlers have done a terrific job. In the 2008 season, Sohail Tanvir of Pakistan was the top wicket-taker. He played for Rajasthan. Rajasthan won the inaugural edition of the IPL. It was R P Singh of Deccan Chargers Hyderabad who took the most number of wickets. Team Hyderabad went on to win the second season in 2009.
For the other seasons, the bowlers could not repeat feats, which their counterparts could do in the first couple of seasons. However, Team Kolkata who roped in Sunil Narine, are into the finals for the first time. Sunil Narine stands at the number two spot with 22 wickets from 13 games. He has the best strike rate (amongst the top three wicket takers in season 5) of 13.9 with an average of 11.95.
