The life of Cole Porter is one of musical genius, decadence and scandal. He lived the life of the glorious days of the roaring twenties even when depression and World War II fell upon us.

Cole Porter

Today I am going to look at the life of Cole Porter. Cole Porter was not an actor but a songwriter and composer responsible for the songs in various Hollywood musicals of days gone by. Cole Porter was born to a wealthy Jewish family in 1891. He died in 1964. Cole defied his grandfather and took up music as a profession; he was trained in classical music.

Musical sensation

Porter was a musical sensation in the 1930s and 1940s. He had a riding accident in 1937 that left him in disabled and in excruciating pain but he still carried on with his music and his life’s work.

Here are some of his songs performed in musicals such as” Kiss Me, Kate. It won the first Tony Award for Best Musical. Porter's other musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady, Anything Goes, Can-Can and Silk Stockings. His numerous hit songs include "Night and Day","Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Well, Did You Evah!", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "You're the Top". He also composed scores for films from the 1930s to the 1950s, including Born to Dance (1936), which featured the song "You'd Be So Easy to Love", Rosalie (1937), which featured "In the Still of the Night"; High Society (1956), which included "True Love"; and Les Girls (1957).”

The early years

Cole Porter came from wealth. His mother was the daughter of the richest man in Indiana at the time. Cole had learned to play the violin at the age of six. By eight he was already playing the piano and he wrote his first operetta at the age of 10; such astounding talent for a boy so young. Cole’s grandfather wanted him to be a lawyer but he would pick his own career which was music. His first song was published in 1915.

“Cole Porter maintained a luxury apartment in Paris, where he entertained lavishly. His parties were extravagant and scandalous, with much gay and bisexual activity, Italian nobility, cross-dressing, international musicians, and a large surplus of recreational drugs".

Linda, Cole Porter’s wife encouraged him to learn classical music which she felt was more elitist and important that writing songs for Broadway musicals.

Lifestyle

Cole Porter and his wife were filthy rich and lived in a palatial home in Paris and rented palaces when traveling. “Porter's work was one of the earliest symphonic jazz-based compositions, predating George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue by four months, and was well received by both French and American reviewers after its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in October 1923.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cole_Porter

Cole Porter did some songs for musicals in 1928, but critics felt he was not interested in cinema which the songs were written for and that he dumbed down on the songs he produced.

Popularity

However, his popularity and tons of songs soared through the 1930s - 1950s. Night and Day, the 1946 Hollywood biopic of Cole Porter, portrayed the pleasure-loving composer as a First World War hero and a devoted husband.

"I got everything I asked for, including Cary Grant and Technicolor," he wrote to a friend at the time.

Health Issues

By 1958 he developed a series of ulcers on his injured leg from the horse riding accident years earlier. He had 34 operations in all. He decided to end his career at this point and lived out his last days in isolation with only a few of his intimate friends. Porter died of kidney failure on October 15, 1964.
