The highest grossing films of 2009 examined and compared, ranked according to how much they earned.

1. Avatar: $1,603,067,000 Worldwide

Written and Directed by James Cameron, famous for his movie Titanic, Avatar was a hugely awaited movie. A futuristic movie set on the idyllic moon 'Pandora', Avatar had been in development by Cameron since 1994. Cameron spent the greater part of 2006 working on the culture of the Na'vi, while waiting for technology to catch up with his vision of the film. The wait was worth it, with the film being immensely successful to the point that Cameron has confirmed two sequels to Avatar, which claimed the spot as the highest grossing film of 2009.

2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: $929,359,401 Worldwide

The sixth film in the Harry Potter series, The Half Blood Prince was directed by the same man responsible for the Order of the Phoenix movie, David Yates. The film was released worldwide on the 24th September. The film opened to massive success, smashing the record for the biggest worldwide single day grossing of all time. In five days the film managed to make over $394 million, and it ranks as the ninth highest grossing film of all time.

3. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: $884,440,756 Worldwide

Also known as 'Ice Age 3', Dawn of the Dinosaurs became the second highest grossing animated film of all time, grossing over $800 million worldwide. Despite the success, the film received mixed reviews from critics averaging just 51% on Metacritic.

4. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: $834,969,807 Worldwide

Despite the film being demolished by critics, Revenge of the Fallen was a huge box office success. In less than a month it surpassed the lifetime earnings of its predecessor and it is currently the second highest grossing film in America. It also succeeded in achieving the third highest grossing opening day of all time, behind New Moon and The Dark Knight.

5. 2012: $767,088,533 Worldwide

2012 managed to top the box office during its opening weekend with $225 million, despite mixed ratings. It eventually became Roland Emmerich's second highest grossing film, after Independence Day. I watched 2012 and it's an awesome movie! I loved the action, thrill and drama in it, especially the airplane missing the collapsing buildings by few inches!
