My opinions are my own, this is why I think our British Formula One Champion deserves a knighthood. Read on to find out more.

Why I think Lewis Hamilton Deserves a Knighthood.

Ever since he overtook on the last bend in 2008 to claim his first world championship at the age of 23, Lewis Hamilton has proved why he is such an outstanding Formula One driver. He has never finished lower than 5th in the drivers championship, even when the Mclaren car he was driving was possibly one of the slowest on the grid.

Ron Dennis had spotted his talent at only 8 years old, and Lewis asked him if he could one day drive in Formula One. His exceptional talent was showing in go cart racing, and when he joined Mc Laren in 2007, to be the team mate of double world champion, Fernando Alonso, he blew everyone away when he started to beat his team mate.

Lewis stayed true to MClaren until 2013, even though the team was slipping behind many of the others in terms of speed and reliability. He was then persuaded by Ross Brawn to change to Mercedes, a choice that many sneered at. But Lewis laughed last, as in the last 5 years, he has taken 3 more world championships, broken the all time pole record, as well as numerous others, and is now second only to Schumaker in race wins.

Off Track

But his talents do not end there, off track he is heavily into fashion, has a gift for music, has shown repeatedly his support of many charities, and many people with disabilities. He has visited war torn countries, where people and children are ill and malnourished, he also supports animal welfare, and as a person has shown himself to be decent and caring .

Because he is aware of his huge following by young would be drivers of the future, when things go wrong on the track, he doesn't lose his temper or swear, and this season he even gave a place back to his team mate, Valtteri Bottas. He was severely provoked by Sebastian Vettel when he deliberately hit his car in Baku, but acted with dignity at all times.

The Trolls

When you are as successful as he has been, inevitably there will be a small minority of people who are jealous, and will stop at nothing to tarnish his name in any way possible, both on twitter, and also through the Press. So many untrue stories have been circulated about him, that I thought it was time our great British champion was afforded the respect he deserves.

He is the most successful British driver ever, having now eclipsed Sir Jackie Stewart's 3 world championships with his own 4th, which equals Vettel's. In 2017, a year that saw us struggling backwards and forwards over Brexit, Lewis Hamilton put the Great back into Britain by as Nikki Lauda said " Driving like a God." Toto Wolff seems to have a good understanding of him, saying that Lewis is unlike other formula one drivers, " He cannot be put in a box." He is absolutely his own person, although he attributes much of his success to his father, and his team.

Will he ever get a Knighthood

It is for those reasons, and many others not even mentioned that I would love to see Lewis recognised by giving him a knighthood. Years ago, without mentioning anyone specific, although they gave us their great music, and supported charities too, many of the people in the musical world did n't hide the fact they were on drugs, being arrested for being inn possession some were alcoholics, and certainly appeared to think their status gave them free licence to behave as they wanted. Hardly a role model for children to follow. Yet still they were knighted.

But Lewis does none of this, he is healthy and clean living, trains all the time to stay on top of his sport, and is a huge role model to people such as Billy Monger, who last year lost his legs in a horrific car racing crash. I do hope the powers that be recognise our British champion, not only would it mean so much to him, but also to all his proud fans.
